Serbian Highflyer

Content sourced from Wikipedia, licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0.

The Serbian Highflyer is a domestic pigeon breed bred for endurance flying. It is famous for long circle flights that can last up to 15 hours and for flying at heights of up to 1,500 metres (4,900 feet). In Serbia, there are about 20,000 enthusiasts who keep and train this breed, and flying contests are popular.

Origin and relations: It is a relatively new breed. It may descend from the Illyrian Pigeon, making it related to the Archangel pigeon. The Archangel has a crest that forms a peak, while the Serbian Highflyer’s crest is more like a spade shape.

Use and popularity: The Serbian Highflyer is kept mainly for performance—the endurance and high-flying ability—rather than exhibition. It is rare outside Serbia, though some flight fanciers around the world admire it.

Show status: A show standard has been adopted by the Australian National Pigeon Association (ANPA).

Important qualities: high flight; long flight; group and circling flight; general appearance.

General appearance: The breed’s standard describes features for head, beak, body, eyes, neck, tail, wings, size, legs and feet, colours and markings, as well as acceptable faults and ring size.
