Thorngumbald
Thorngumbald is a village and civil parish in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, in the Holderness area. It sits about 8 miles east of Hull on the A1033. The parish includes the village plus the hamlets of Camerton and Ryehill. In 2011, the population was 3,392, up from 3,106 in 2001.
Thorngumbald was once a Viking settlement. Its emblem is a Viking helmet with wings. The name has changed many times over the centuries; the current form has been in use since the 17th century, with the Gumbaud family linked to the area in the past.
The parish church is St Mary’s, a Grade II listed building. There used to be a Methodist church built in 1904, though its stones were relaid in 1984.
The village centre has five shops, including a Boots chemist, a newsagent, a deli, and a fish and chip shop. A small mini supermarket opened in 2021. There are three hairdressers, a Chinese takeaway, the New Royal Mail pub, a restaurant, and a post office.
Thorngumbald Primary School serves children aged 4–11 and moved to a new site on Plumtree Road in 2007 after merging with the infant and junior schools. The nearest secondary school is South Holderness Technology College in Preston, which serves students up to 16 (with a sixth form for older students) and is reached by school transport.
The village was once served by a railway at Ryehill and Burstwick, which closed in 1964. Today EYMS buses run daily to Withernsea and Hull. In 2013 there was attention over the cost of bus passes for the school, which were around £540 a year.
There is a nursery on Grange Road. The village has a football club, Thorngumbald Barrons, which plays in the Hull & District Youth Football League at Plumtree Road.
Notable people from Thorngumbald include England rugby league player Jon Wilkin and former Hull City footballer Chris Chilton.
Community life centers on the Village Hall and Parish Council, which organise activities and courses, such as ICT classes, bowls, table tennis, line dancing, and the annual Scarecrow Trail.
