Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics
Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (SBMT) is a non-profit biomedical group founded in 2004. It focuses on brain mapping and planning brain surgery using imaging, immunohistochemistry, molecular biology, stem cells, engineering, neurophysiology, and nanotechnology. It is based in Pacific Palisades, California. The founder, chairman and CEO is Babak Kateb, and the current president is Deborah Zelisnky.
SBMT connects with the Brain Mapping Foundation, which provides funding to its members. It also works with the International Brain Mapping and Intraoperative Surgical Planning Society (IBMISPS).
In 2013, SBMT defined brain mapping as the study of the brain and spinal cord anatomy and function through various imaging techniques, plus molecular and cellular methods.
SBMT aims to accelerate the development and safe use of new brain technologies in medicine. It played a role in shaping Obama’s BRAIN Initiative and, in 2013, launched the G20+ World Brain Mapping & Therapeutic Initiative to create a global brain-mapping effort. This initiative focuses on integrating nanotechnology, imaging, stem cell therapies, information technology, and devices—referred to as NanoBioElectronics.
Partners include the Australian government and biotech sector, the Canadian government and scientists, Turkish scientists, and more than 200 universities and research institutions worldwide, including many U.S. government agencies. SBMT has nearly 3,000 industry contacts. Board members typically serve one-year terms, with possible extensions based on activity.
