Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour season 2008
The 2008 Pro Tour season was the 13th season of Magic: The Gathering’s Pro Tour. It started on 15 December 2007 with Grand Prix Stuttgart and ended on 14 December 2008 with the World Championship in Memphis. The season featured 21 Grand Prixs and four Pro Tours in Kuala Lumpur, Hollywood, Berlin, and Memphis, with the Summer Series Grand Prixs in June–August offering bigger prizes and extra Pro Points.
Shuhei Nakamura won the Pro Player of the Year, becoming the fourth straight Japanese player to earn the title. Five players were inducted into the Hall of Fame: Dirk Baberowski, Michael Turian, Jelger Wiegersma, Olivier Ruel, and Ben Rubin.
Pro Tour Kuala Lumpur saw Jon Finkel win, becoming the first Hall of Fame member to win a Pro Tour after his induction. The event used Booster Draft (Lorwyn–Morningtide) format and had a prize pool of $230,795 with 346 players.
Pro Tour Hollywood was won by Charles Gindy, who defeated Jan Ruess in the finals with a green-black elf/rock deck. The event used Standard format, with a prize pool of $230,795 and 371 players.
Pro Tour Berlin was won by Luis Scott-Vargas, defeating Matej Zatlkaj in the finals. It used the Extended format, with a prize pool of $230,795 and 454 players.
The World Championship in Memphis crowned Antti Malin as World Champion in the individual competition, and the United States won the team event against Australia. The World Championship prize pool was $245,245 for individuals plus $192,425 for national teams. Formats were Standard, Booster Draft (Shards of Alara), and Extended.
After Worlds, Nakamura was named Pro Player of the Year. The season also highlighted strong performance from Japan, which had the most Top 8 appearances, while the United States had many Pro Tour appearances overall.
