Sesoko Island
Sesoko Island is a small island in northern Okinawa, Japan. It covers about 3 square kilometers and is part of Motobu town in Kunigami District. The island is a popular beach destination and can be reached by car via the 762-meter Sesoko Bridge. From Sesoko you can see nearby Iejima and Minnajima, and coral reefs lie about 500 meters offshore.
Historically, Sesoko was part of the Ryukyu Kingdom in the 15th century. After Japan annexed the kingdom in 1879, it became part of Okinawa Prefecture. In 1950, during the postwar period, it came under the United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands. Okinawa, including Sesoko, was returned to Japan in 1972.
The island is home to Ryukyuan and Japanese people.
