Prairie Home Invasion
Prairie Home Invasion is a collaboration between Jello Biafra and Mojo Nixon, with Nixon’s Toadliquors backing them up. The album was released on March 24, 1994 by Alternative Tentacles and runs about 62 minutes. It shows a cowpunk sound, mixing honky-tonk with punk, and features political lyrics that skew corporate rock and country pop. Jello Biafra supplies most of the lead vocals, though some tracks lean more on Nixon’s voice, and much of the material is driven by Nixon’s frantic, satirical delivery.
About half the songs are covers, including public-domain folk tunes. The lyrics tackle a variety of political topics and social commentary. Notable songs include:
- Love Me, I’m a Liberal, a modern take on Phil Ochs’s left-leaning folk tradition
- Buy My Snake Oil, which targets corporate rock and figures like Don Henley
- Let’s Go Burn Ole Nashville Down, criticizing manufactured country music
- Nostalgia for an Age that Never Existed, a critique of 1950s romanticism, baby-boomer hypocrisy, and punk
- Will the Fetus Be Aborted, satirizing anti-abortion sentiment (set to Will the Circle Be Unbroken)
- Atomic Power, performed in a Christian bluegrass style
The lyrics also touch on deforestation, atomic power, truckers, and humorous religious quirks. The artwork parodies Grant Wood’s American Gothic, and the packaging includes news clippings and Tom Tomorrow’s This Modern World strips.
Prairie Home Invasion was issued on CD, cassette, and vinyl in 1994. In 2022, Alternative Tentacles released a music video for Will The Fetus Be Aborted in response to the Roe v. Wade decision, described as timely by critics.
Reception noted that Nixon’s vocal presence stands out, with AllMusic highlighting his guitar work. Some critics felt the album isn’t the strongest in its country-meets-alternative rock era, but many regard it as an irreverent, cowpunk classic.
