Mahmood Hasan Gangohi
Mahmood Hasan Gangohi (July 1907 – 2 September 1996) was an Indian Islamic scholar and mufti. He served as the Head Mufti of Darul Uloom Deoband and of Mazahir Uloom in Saharanpur, and he was the senior disciple of Zakariyya Kandhlawi.
Born in Gangoh, British India, he studied at Mazahir Uloom in Saharanpur and at Darul Uloom Deoband. He later taught in Saharanpur and Deoband, and was known for issuing many fatwas. His 32-volume collection, Fataawa Mahmoodiyah, is an important reference for Hanafi Islamic law.
Gangohi also served as Principal of Jami Ul Uloom in Kanpur for about 14 years, and in his later years he was Head Mufti of Darul Uloom Deoband. His notable students included Abul Qasim Nomani, Rahmatullah Mir Qasmi, Ebrahim Desai, Ahmed Khanpuri, Muhammad Yusuf Taulawi, Mufti Muhammad Ayub, Mufti Sabeel Ahmed, and Mufti Muhammad Saeed Motara.
He died while visiting South Africa in September 1996 at the invitation of Maulana Ibrahim Pandor and was buried in Elsburg near Hazeldene. He was a Sunni Muslim of the Hanafi school within the Deobandi movement.
