Château Bélair-Monange
Château Bélair-Monange is a top Bordeaux vineyard in Saint-Émilion, on the Right Bank. It is classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé B in the Saint-Émilion system. The estate is next to Château Ausone.
It was known as Château Belair until 2007; wines from the 2007 harvest onward carry the Bélair-Monange name in memory of Anne-Adèle Monange, wife of Jean Moueix.
The vineyard dates back to the 18th century and has changed owners several times. It was connected to the Canolle family and later the Dubois-Challon family. In 2008, after financial difficulties, the property was sold to the Moueix family, who kept the Bélair-Monange name.
In 2012, Bélair-Monange merged with nearby Château Magdelaine, another Moueix property, and kept the Bélair-Monange name. Bélair-Monange covers about 12.5 hectares (roughly 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc). Magdelaine covers about 11 hectares (about 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc). Magdelaine’s grand vin was usually around 3,000 cases a year, with a second wine called Saint Brice around 2,000 cases. Since 2014, a second wine named Annonce has also been produced.
Today, Bélair-Monange produces the estate’s main wine, Château Bélair-Monange, from this combined vineyard.
