Brawl in the Family is the seventh episode of The Simpsons’ 13th season. It aired on Fox in the United States on January 6, 2002. The episode was directed by Matthew Nastuk and written by Joel H. Cohen, marking Cohen’s first full writing credit for a Simpsons episode. Production code: DABF01. Guests include Jane Kaczmarek as Judge Constance Harm and Delroy Lindo as Gabriel. The couch gag shows the sofa replaced by a hedge, with a gardener trimming a topiary of The Simpsons.

Plot summary:
After the Simpsons are arrested for domestic violence, a social worker named Gabriel moves in to help the family become functional. Once the family is deemed acceptable, two cocktail waitresses, Amber and Ginger, arrive—revealing that Homer and Ned Flanders were married to them in Las Vegas. This episode was intended as a sequel to the season 10 episode Viva Ned Flanders, and Al Jean had pitched the idea to resolve its loose ending. Amber and Ginger are voiced by Pamela Hayden and Tress MacNeille, respectively.

In the story, Springfield’s environmental laws are repealed, causing pollution and an acid rainstorm that ruins the family’s TV antenna. The Simpsons spend time indoors playing Monopoly, during which Bart cheats by using Lego bricks as hotel pieces. When the game escalates, the family quarrels and Maggie calls the police, leading to their arrest. Gabriel moves in to help them, and he diagnoses the family’s problems: Marge relies on food for comfort, Bart seeks attention through dangerous stunts, Lisa has a savior complex, and Homer is a drunken buffoon. Gabriel then sets up a teamwork challenge: retrieve a picnic basket from a tree, which supposedly contains beer. Homer’s reckless attempt to knock the tree down with the family car traps Gabriel, but the family eventually rescues him and earns his praise for working together.

Amber and Ginger return, and Homer tries to annul his Vegas marriage, but Judge Harm refuses to dissolve it, citing Nevada’s polygamy laws and Homer’s failure to divorce Amber. Marge bans Homer from the home, and he moves into Bart’s treehouse with Amber, who flirts with him to provoke Marge. Amber’s attempts to bond with the kids fail, and Marge grows jealous. The next day, Marge and Homer argue, and Homer announces he is leaving for Amber. Amber soon discovers she is married to Grampa Simpson, and the family has video proof of the ceremony. Amber and Ginger decide to return to Las Vegas, while the family, having stuck together, celebrates their unity. Grampa initially grieves but quickly comes to accept Amber’s departure.

Production notes:
The episode was the first full writing credit for Joel H. Cohen and the first season where Al Jean served as sole showrunner. The idea for the episode was to follow up Viva Ned Flanders. The guest voice of Gabriel was Delroy Lindo, chosen for his strong voice; Lindo later commented on the design of the character and his performance. Jane Kaczmarek voiced Judge Constance Harm.

Reception and release:
In its original broadcast, the episode was watched by about 12.8 million U.S. viewers, ranking 28th for the week. It was nominated for an Environmental Media Award in the “Television Episodic – Comedy” category but lost to Dharma & Greg. The episode was released on The Simpsons: The Complete Thirteenth Season DVD and Blu-ray set on August 24, 2010, with audio commentary from Al Jean, Joel H. Cohen, Max Pross, Delroy Lindo, Matt Warburton, and David Silverman.

Critical response to the episode has been mixed. Some critics found the plot unoriginal and pacing weak, while others praised it as a fan favorite and a notable season highlight.
