Matthew Brendan Boyle is an American philosopher and the Emerson and Grace Wineland Pugh Professor of Humanities at the University of Chicago. He works mainly in the philosophy of mind and also in the history of philosophy. He earned a BA from Harvard University, a BPhil from Oxford University, and a PhD from the University of Pittsburgh. His 2005 dissertation was Kant and the Significance of Self-Consciousness. His PhD advisor was John McDowell, with other mentors including Robert Brandom, Stephen Engstrom, Michael Thompson, and James Conant.
