Wang Qun (politician, born 1961)
Wang Qun (born June 1961) is a Chinese politician who spent his career in Hunan province. He served as the secretary-general of the Hunan Provincial People’s Government from March 2017 to July 2021, during Governor Xu Dazhe’s tenure. Before that, he was the party secretary of Changde and the chairman of Changde’s Municipal People’s Congress.
Wang was born in Yuanjiang County, Hunan. He studied machine manufacturing at Tianxin Railway Technical School and later attended the Central Party School of the Chinese Communist Party. He joined the Communist Party in October 1987.
His career began in Zhuzhou, where he worked as a technician and rose through leadership roles. In 1996 he became deputy secretary-general of Zhuzhou Municipal People’s Government and was director and deputy party branch secretary of the Government Office. He then held several local leadership posts, including party secretary of Shifeng District and Tianyuan District, and secretary of the Zhuzhou High-tech Zone’s Party Working Committee.
In 2005 he became secretary of Zhuzhou’s Commission for Discipline Inspection, and in 2006 he was named executive vice mayor of Zhuzhou, later serving as acting mayor in 2008 and then mayor in 2009. He also served as deputy party secretary.
In March 2013, Wang was named party secretary of Changde and, from January 2017, chairman of Changde Municipal People’s Congress. In March 2017 he moved to the provincial capital Changsha to take the posts of secretary-general of the Hunan Provincial People’s Government and party branch secretary of the Government Office, where he stayed until his retirement in July 2021. He then became a counselor to the Hunan Provincial People’s Government.
On 2 April 2023, Wang Qun was placed under investigation for “serious violations of discipline and laws” by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission.
