Metropolitan–London League
Metropolitan–London League
The Metropolitan–London League was a short-lived English football league for clubs around London. It was formed in 1971 from a merger of the Greater London League and the Metropolitan League (which had lost several clubs to the Southern League).
The league ran two divisions from 1971 to 1974, then reduced to a single division for the 1974–75 season. In 1975 it merged with the Spartan League to form the London Spartan League (later renamed the Spartan League). This later merged with the South Midlands League in 1997 to create the modern Spartan South Midlands League.
The competition featured between 20 and 25 clubs during its existence. Epping Town won the most championships, with two titles.
Around the 1974–75 reorganization, the new single division was made up mainly of clubs from Division Two, with several renamings: Woolwich Polytechnic became Thames Polytechnic, Northern Polytechnic became Polytechnic of North London, and Vokins became 279 Chislehurst. New clubs included Penhill Standard (promoted to Division One) and East Thurrock United (joined Division Two). East Thurrock United and Highfield were subsequently promoted to Division One from Division Two.
