Ballyfermot, or Baile Formaid, is a Dublin suburb about 7 km west of the city centre, just south of Phoenix Park. It is bordered by Chapelizod to the north, Bluebell to the south, Inchicore and Kilmainham to the east, and Palmerstown and Cherry Orchard to the west. The River Liffey runs along the north side and the Grand Canal lies to the south.

History and name
The Irish name Baile Formaid means “farmstead.” In medieval times the area was held by Cambro-Norman families and local Irish chiefs. Ballyfermot Castle stood near Le Fanu and Raheen Roads. In the 18th–19th centuries a number of large houses were built. After the 1940s Dublin City Council built new housing estates here to meet postwar demand.

Today and where it sits
Ballyfermot is in Dublin 10. It sits near major routes: the N4 to the north, the N7 to the south, and the M50 to the west. The area includes industrial estates such as Park West and JFK, with Kylemore Road lined by many businesses.

Transport
Public transport includes Dublin Bus routes G1, G2 and 60, and Go-Ahead Ireland routes L55, S4 and W2. Cherry Orchard/Park West Station serves the area, and the Luas light rail system has a nearby stop with plans to extend toward Lucan.

Parks and recreation
California Hills Park (also called Glenaulin Park) is the main green space, offering views over the Liffey valley. The Grand Canal runs along the southern edge for walks. Other parks include Le Fanu Park, Markievicz Park and Cherry Orchard Park. The Memorial Gardens and National War Memorial are accessible from nearby East Timor Park.

Facilities and services
Cherry Orchard Hospital and the Ballyfermot Medical Clinic provide health care, with a new Primary Care and Mental Health Centre nearby. The Hermitage Medical Clinic is nearby at Liffey Valley. Local schools include Mary Queen of Angels National School, the Dominican Campus, and St Ultan’s; for secondary education, St Seton’s and Kylemore College serve the area. Ballyfermot College of Further Education is a key local institution, known for its animation program and for helping launch several successful studios.

Community and clubs
The area hosts the Ballyfermot Community Festival and has community centres such as St Matthew’s. There are libraries and youth services like Ballyfermot Youth Service and St Mary’s Youth Club. Local sports include Ballyfermot De La Salle GAA, Liffey Gaels GAA, Cherry Orchard F.C., Ballyfermot United FC, and boxing clubs. A Traveller community is mainly located in Labre Park.

Overall
Ballyfermot combines a long local history with modern housing, industry, and strong community life, supported by good transport links and plenty of parks, schools, and clubs.
