History
Lincoln High School opened in 1913 with about 300 students to help manage growing enrollment at another city high school. The first senior class graduated in 1916. By 1934 the school had about 5,000 students, making it the second-largest in the state at that time. The school sits at 60 Crescent Avenue on the former site of a mansion once owned by George Theodore Werts, a former New Jersey governor.
Athletics
The Lions compete in the Hudson County Interscholastic League and participate in the North Jersey Super Football Conference for football. For most sports, Lincoln is classified as Group II (as of 2019–20). The football program teams up with Palisades Park High School for 2024–2026 in a co-op arrangement.
Athletic highlights include state and sectional titles in boys track and in boys basketball, with a 2008 Group II state championship and other notable playoff appearances. The girls basketball team won the 2019 North II Group II sectional title and was named North II regional champion in 2020 before the finals were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The football program has had strong seasons, including a North I Group III title in 1981 and playoff appearances in 2009 and 2010. Longtime head coach Robert Hampton has led the football team since the 2005–06 season.
