Griebelschied
Griebelschied is a small municipality in the Birkenfeld district in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It belongs to the collective municipality of Herrstein-Rhaunen, whose seat is in Herrstein. The village lies west of the Nahe River, between Kirn and Herrstein, and about 43 percent of the area is forested. Griebelschied was first mentioned in 1279. In 1800, the outlaw Schinderhannes is said to have held his “Robber’s Ball of Griebelschied” there.
The local council has six members elected by the people, with an honorary mayor as chairman. The current mayor is Markus Hey (2019–2024). The coat of arms features a gold field with a red lion and a design referencing an oak leaf and acorns.
There are listed monuments in the area. The southeast is crossed by the Bundesstraße 41. Nearby Kirn has a railway station on the Nahe Valley Railway (Bingen–Saarbrücken).
Griebelschied covers 4.19 square kilometers and sits at about 397 meters above sea level. As of December 31, 2023, its population was 170, giving a density of around 41 people per square kilometer. The postal code is 55608, the area code 06752, and the vehicle registration code is BIR. The village observes Central European Time (UTC+1) and Central European Summer Time (UTC+2).
