Neobirsteiniamysis is a genus of large, deep-water mysid crustaceans in the family Mysidae (subfamily Boreomysinae). It is cosmopolitan and currently includes two species. These mysids live exclusively in deep ocean waters, from about 700 to 7,200 meters deep. They are among the largest mysids. Their eyes lack a cornea and are concave from the sides, with tiny microfibrous structures on the inner surface. The telson’s lateral margins are as wide as or wider than the front part of the telson. The statocyst (balance organ) is poorly developed. The type species is Petalophthalmus inermis Willemoes-Suhm, 1874. The genus name combines neo- (Greek for “new”) with Birsteiniamysis—the older, now unavailable genus name that was replaced.
