Off the Road is Carolyn Cassady’s memoir about the birth of the Beat Generation. Published in 1990 and later reissued in London by Black Spring Press to mark the 50th anniversary of Kerouac’s On the Road, the book is told from Carolyn’s perspective as Neal Cassady’s wife and Kerouac’s lover. It follows the early friendship between Kerouac and Neal as Kerouac works to publish his first novel, The Town and the City (1950), and highlights key Beat moments like the success of On the Road and Allen Ginsberg’s Howl, showing how the movement shaped American culture.
