2014 Arizona gubernatorial election
The 2014 Arizona gubernatorial election was held on November 4, 2014, to choose the state’s governor. Incumbent Republican Jan Brewer was term-limited and could not run for another term.
The Republican primary was competitive, with six candidates. Arizona State Treasurer Doug Ducey won the Republican nomination. Democrat Fred DuVal, who had been the chair of the Arizona Board of Regents, won his party’s nomination unopposed.
In the general election, Doug Ducey defeated Fred DuVal, winning 53.44% of the vote to 41.62%. Ducey received 805,062 votes to DuVal’s 626,921.
Background context:
- Janet Napolitano resigned as governor in 2009 to become Homeland Security Secretary. Because Arizona has no lieutenant governor, Secretary of State Jan Brewer became governor in 2009 and won a full term in 2010.
- Brewer was term-limited in 2014 and chose not to pursue another term after considering it in early 2014.
The 2014 Republican primary set a record for spending in a Arizona gubernatorial race, with about $16.2 million across the six candidates. Doug Ducey carried six of Arizona’s nine congressional districts, including one that elected a Democrat.
