Tom Morris (businessman)
Tom Morris (Thomas Joseph Morris) is a British businessman and the founder and 89% owner of Home Bargains. He was born on 10 February 1954 in Liverpool, England, into a family with three generations of retail experience. He started the discount store chain in 1976 in Old Swan, Liverpool, when he was about 21. It began as “Home and Bargain,” selling groceries, health and beauty products, toys and other discounted items, often buying stock from brands clearing excess products. In 1995 the stores were renamed Home Bargains and a new logo was introduced, designed by a family member. He reportedly started the business with a bank overdraft.
Today Home Bargains has more than 595 stores and over 34,000 employees, with its biggest presence in Merseyside. Morris has said he plans to grow the chain to more than 800 stores. The group is led by the parent company TJ Morris; Morris owns 89%. His younger brother Joe Morris is a smaller shareholder and serves as operations director, and three other Morris brothers also work for the company.
Morris has become very wealthy. Forbes put his net worth at about $5 billion in December 2024. Earlier figures include around £2.05 billion in 2014 and about $3.1 billion in 2018. The 2023 Sunday Times Rich List estimated his wealth at about £6.133 billion, making him the richest Liverpudlian and one of the wealthiest people in North West England.
He lives in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, and has five children. In 2018 he paid himself £1 million. His son worked for the company in 2001, and his daughter Lisa and her American husband Brian run Morris Textiles, a linen business.
