The 1799 Pennsylvania gubernatorial election was held on October 8, 1799. The incumbent governor, Thomas Mifflin, did not run. The race was between Federalist U.S. Senator James Ross and Thomas McKean, a retired chief justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court who was aligned with the Federalists and favored a strong state government.

McKean won the election with 4,733 votes (54.0%), defeating Ross, who received 4,021 votes (46.0%).

Some historians view McKean’s victory as a hint of the political shift that would lead to Thomas Jefferson’s win in the 1800 presidential election.
