Virtuous Wives
Virtuous Wives
Virtuous Wives is a 1918 American silent drama film directed by George Loane Tucker and starring Anita Stewart. It is based on the novel Virtuous Wives by Owen Johnson. The movie is considered lost today. It was produced by Anita Stewart and Louis B. Mayer, and it marked Mayer’s first film project. Hedda Hopper (as Mrs. DeWolf Hopper) co-stars as Irma.
Plot: Amy and Andrew Forrester are a happily married couple living in comfort from Andrew’s income of $25,000 a year. Andrew turns down a business offer from steel magnate Maurice Delabarre, but Delabarre persuades him to reconsider and invites them to his home. Amy feels their life is not good enough and pushes Andrew to accept the opportunity, even if it means they will be apart. Amy enters high society and challenges Irma’s position. Irma invites Andrew back, and on his return he judges Amy’s new lifestyle by old-fashioned standards, wondering whether she is a virtuous wife.
