Ciro Gomes
Ciro Ferreira Gomes, born on November 6, 1957, is a Brazilian politician, lawyer, professor, and writer. Raised in Ceará in a family with a long political tradition, he studied law at the Federal University of Ceará and taught tax and constitutional law before entering public life. He is known for his outspoken style and has been a prominent figure in Brazilian politics for decades.
Early career and major offices
- Mayor of Fortaleza (1989–1990): At 31, he became the city’s mayor, gaining national attention for his approach to urban and social issues.
- Governor of Ceará (1991–1994): As governor, he promoted education and health programs. His Viva Criança program reduced infant mortality in Ceará by about 32% and earned international recognition from UNICEF.
- Minister of Finance (1994): For a short period in 1994, he helped oversee the Real Plan during Itamar Franco’s presidency, a key move in stabilizing Brazil’s economy after years of hyperinflation.
