Vanderbilt University School of Engineering is a private engineering school within Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Founded in 1879, it is the oldest private engineering school in the American South. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs in biomedical, civil, chemical, environmental, electrical, and mechanical engineering, plus computer science. The school has about 1,300 undergraduates and 144 faculty members. It has a high share of female engineers—about 41.6%—well above the national average of 22.5%. It is ranked among the top engineering schools in the United States, with U.S. News & World Report listing it 31st for undergrad engineering and 34th for graduate programs. Vanderbilt is classified as a Research University with very high research activity, and the School of Engineering conducts important engineering and cross-disciplinary research, supported by specialized research centers. In 2014, a Vanderbilt Biomedical Engineering researcher was found to have fraudulently falsified many articles published from 2000 to 2005. The Vanderbilt Engineering Council gives students a voice in school decisions and helps communication between students, faculty, and administration. Many student organizations are tied to national engineering societies and host meetings with films, speakers, or field trips. Freshmen and sophomores can attend meetings, while juniors and seniors are encouraged to join the appropriate professional societies.
