Will Stewart (bishop)
Will Stewart (William Allen Stewart), known as Will, (19 September 1943 – 24 March 1998) was an English Anglican bishop. He served as the Bishop of Taunton in the Diocese of Bath and Wells from June 1997 until his death in March 1998, one of the shortest tenures in the Anglican Communion. He was unusually tall at 6 feet 7 inches.
He studied at Uppingham School and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he earned a Master of Arts. He was ordained a deacon on 29 September 1968 and a priest on 28 September 1969 by John Taylor, Bishop of Sheffield, at Sheffield Cathedral.
He began his ministry as a curate at Ecclesall and then Cheltenham. He later became Vicar of St James, Gloucester, and Rector of St Mary Magdalene, Torquay. A move to St Mark, Oulton Broad followed, then he became Rural Dean of Lothingland and, before his appointment as bishop, a Canon of Norwich Cathedral.
He was married to Janet Andrews in 1969, and they had four children: two sons and two daughters. His parents were William and Betty Stewart.
Stewart died on 24 March 1998 at the age of 54, ending a brief but notable time as bishop. He was preceded by Richard Lewis and succeeded by Andy Radford.
