USS MacKenzie (DD-175)
USS MacKenzie (DD-175) was a Wickes-class destroyer of the US Navy. Named after Alexander Slidell MacKenzie, she was built in San Francisco by Union Iron Works. Construction began on July 4, 1918, she was launched on September 29, 1918, and she was commissioned on July 25, 1919. After a brief service with the Pacific Fleet, MacKenzie was decommissioned on May 27, 1922 and kept in reserve. She was recommissioned on November 6, 1939 as tensions rose before World War II. In 1940, under the Destroyers for Bases Agreement, she was transferred to Canada on September 24 and became HMCS Annapolis, a Town-class destroyer. The Royal Canadian Navy named her after the Annapolis River in Nova Scotia. Annapolis underwent repairs that left one boiler and a funnel removed, and she served with escort forces, protecting Atlantic convoys from Newfoundland to New York. In 1944 she was assigned to HMCS Cornwallis near Annapolis, Nova Scotia, and served as a training ship for the rest of the war. She was decommissioned in Canada and turned over for scrapping on June 4, 1945. The ship’s bell is kept in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. The US Navy struck her from its list on January 8, 1941.
