St. John's School (Guam)
St. John's School is a private college-preparatory school in the Tumon Bay area of Tamuning, Guam. It serves students from pre-K3 through 12th grade and is affiliated with the Episcopal Church in Micronesia. The school is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization to offer the IB Diploma.
History in brief: The first off-base Episcopal church on Guam, St. John the Divine, was established in 1957. St. John's School opened in September 1962 with five teachers for kindergarten through fourth grade. Typhoons Karen (1962) and Olive (1963) damaged the original huts, and Marines helped by setting up tents; a 10-room building followed, then a larger concrete building in 1964. Under Dr. Maryly Van Leer Peck, who began in 1970, the school expanded to include high school and now serves students through 12th grade.
Enrollment and programs: The school has an average class size of about 15. About 90% of students are local with a mix of backgrounds, and roughly 10% are international. St. John’s offers a full Pre-K through 12 program and is IB Diploma authorized.
Athletics and activities: The Knights compete in seven sports—basketball, cross country, golf, rugby, soccer, tennis, and volleyball—in the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam. School colors are red and white, and the mascot is the Knights. The motto is Ad Astra per Optima (Reach for the stars). The president is Bart Jackson, the head of school is Michelle Untalan, and the athletics coach is Mr. Chris Shepherd.
