Smethport Area School District is a rural public school district in McKean County, Pennsylvania. Located in the north-central part of the state, it sits in Smethport, the county seat, and covers about 334 square miles. The district serves Smethport Borough and four townships: Hamlin, Keating, Norwich, and Sergeant. The population served was about 6,399 in 2000 and 6,121 in 2010. In 2009, the per capita income was $15,819 and the median family income was $39,809, lower than the state and national medians around $49,500 in 2010. The district’s facilities are entirely in Smethport. It operates one elementary school (K–6) and, via a tunnel, Smethport Area Junior-Senior High School for grades 7–12. The superintendent’s offices are in the elementary school. The district offers many clubs, activities, and sports. The mascot is the wagon wheel, and teams are called The Hubbers, a nod to Smethport as the county seat—the hub of McKean County. Students can take part in band, choir, National Honor Society, peer helpers, color guard, DECA, and student council. Website: smethportschools.com
