Born in Bluefield, Virginia, Spencer played football in high school and started amateur boxing in 2006, becoming a Golden Gloves champion. He turned pro in 2009. After early fights in Texas promotions, he joined Bellator and beat Joseph Daily in 2012. He then fought for Legacy FC, defeating Evan Cutts, before joining the UFC in 2013.

In the UFC, Spencer debuted on short notice against Rafael Natal and lost by arm-triangle choke. He moved down to welterweight and beat Yuri Villefort by split decision. The bout earned Fight of the Night. He then lost to Yancy Medeiros at UFC 203 and was released by the UFC. He returned to the Legacy Fighting Alliance, where he lost to Bilal Williams at LFA 47.
