Takht Jamshid Cup
Takht Jamshid Cup (جام تخت جمشید, Jâm-e Taxt-e Jamšid) was Iran’s national football league from 1974 to 1979. It was named after Takht-e Jamshid, the Persian name for Persepolis. Before this league, Iran had no official national competition; champions were usually just the best team in Tehran’s league.
The 1973–74 season started with 12 clubs and Persepolis won the first title, two points ahead of Taj. For 1974–75 the league grew to 16 teams, and Esteghlal won the championship, beating Persepolis. In 1975–76, Persepolis won again, helped by star Ali Parvin, with Homa finishing second. The next two seasons were won by PAS Tehran under coach Hassan Habibi, both times ahead of Persepolis. At that time the Takht Jamshid Cup was one of Asia’s strongest leagues.
Iran’s national team then won the AFC Asian Cup in 1976 and qualified for the 1978 FIFA World Cup, the country’s first. The 1978–79 season was abandoned after 12 matchdays; Shahbaz F.C. led the table at that point. After the 1979 Revolution and the Iran–Iraq War, the Takht Jamshid Cup and the lower leagues were dissolved. The Tehran Province League again acted as the national champion.
