HMS Irwell (1926)
HMS Irwell (1926) was a Hunt-class minesweeper of the Aberdare sub-class built for the Royal Navy in the United Kingdom. She began life as Bridlington, was renamed Goole before launch, and was built by the Ayrshire Dockyard Company in Irvine, North Ayrshire. She was launched on 12 August 1919 and completed in April 1926. Commissioned that month, she was renamed Irwell in September 1926 to serve as a Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve drillship. She arrived at Lacmotts, Liverpool for breaking up on 27 November 1962.
Design and dimensions:
- Aberdare sub-class, a larger version of the original Hunt-class with more powerful armament
- Displacement: about 750 long tons (normal) to 930 long tons (full load)
- Length: about 231 feet; beam: 28 feet 6 inches; draught: 7 feet 6 inches
- Propulsion: two shafts, two vertical triple-expansion steam engines, two Yarrow boilers, about 2,200 ihp
- Speed: 16 knots
- Range: about 1,500 nautical miles at 15 knots
- Crew: around 74
- Armament: one QF 4-inch (102 mm) gun forward and one QF 12-pounder anti-aircraft gun aft (variants included other small guns).
