Saint-Athanase River

Saint-Athanase River is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows in the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean region, within the Le Fjord-du-Saguenay Regional County Municipality, in the municipality of Petit-Saguenay.

Origin and course: The river starts from Petit Lac Alphée, at about 183 meters above sea level, near Petit-Saguenay. It is about 9.7 kilometers long and travels south to the Saguenay River, entering at the Anse au Cheval on the south shore, in Petit-Saguenay. The mouth is about 3 meters above sea level.

Valley and economy: The Saint-Athanase River Valley is mainly served by Saint-Louis Road and Saint-Etienne Road. Forestry is the main economic activity in the area, followed by recreational tourism.

Climate and ice: The river’s surface is usually frozen from early December to late March, with safe ice from mid-December to mid-March.

Name: The name Saint-Athanase comes from Saint Athanasius, a Catholic saint. The name was officially adopted on December 5, 1968.
