Play Novel Silent Hill
Play Novel Silent Hill is a portable visual novel for the Game Boy Advance. It’s based on Konami’s 1999 Silent Hill for the PlayStation and uses text shown over images, with players choosing options that can steer the story in different directions. The game also includes small mini-games.
The main story follows Harry Mason in Silent Hill as he searches for his missing daughter Cheryl. He encounters a cult trying to revive a deity. After finishing Harry’s story, a new option appears letting players read Cybil Bennett’s perspective, whom Harry meets in the original game. There’s also a Boy’s Story from Andy that can be played using the Mobile Adapter GB.
In total, the Harry and Cybil paths offer many endings—up to 28 different conclusions depending on the choices made. The game merges narrative choices with occasional puzzles, like sliding tile games, and can be played in multiple routes to see different outcomes.
Play Novel Silent Hill was released in Japan on March 21, 2001, and was one of the Game Boy Advance’s launch titles. It was never officially released in English, though fan translations and ports have appeared. It was developed by Will Corporation and KCE Tokyo, with some graphics drawn from the original game’s FMV sequences and others newly created for the GBA. The project carried the working title Silent Hill AGB, and a planned four-chapter Andy story was never released due to technical limits of the Mobile System GB.
Reception was mixed. Some critics praised the dual perspectives (Harry and Cybil) and the flowchart-style navigation that helped players explore paths. Others found the presentation dull at times or felt the visuals didn’t live up to the original game. Retrospective reviews have noted strong character visuals and atmosphere from sound, but also pointed out that the game can feel text-heavy and that puzzles appear irregularly. Since its release, fans have created translations, guides, patches, and fan-made ports, keeping the title alive in English communities.
