Petrus Houttuyn, also known as Peter Hotton (18 June 1648, Amsterdam – 10 January 1709, Leiden), was a Dutch botanist and medical professor at Leiden University. As professor of botany, he supervised the university’s botanic garden and received an official residence plus funds for foreign correspondence and exchanging seeds and plants. He studied medicine in Leiden and earned his medical degree in 1672. In 1695 he became professor of botany at Leiden, succeeding Paul Hermann. He was a member of the Leopoldina and a fellow of the Royal Society of London. He was succeeded by Herman Boerhaave. The plant genus Hottonia (Primulaceae) was named in his honor.
