The Shanghai Expeditionary Army was a temporary Japanese army formed during the Second Sino-Japanese War. It first existed in early 1932 as a reinforcement for the First Battle of Shanghai, but was dissolved a few months later. Troops from the Taiwan Army were part of it, and it was led by General Iwane Matsui. The army was raised again on August 15, 1937, when full-scale war with China began. Its forces fought in the Second Battle of Shanghai and then moved inland toward Nanjing. Soldiers from this army were involved in the Nanjing Massacre. The army was dissolved on February 1, 1938, and its units were merged into the Japanese Central China Area Army.
