On The Record is the student newspaper of Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) in Toronto, Canada. It was formerly called The Ryersonian. Journalism students run the paper as a capstone course for the Bachelor of Journalism program, with options to work part-time or full-time for one term. Master’s students can also take part. The publication produces daily news for its website, live blogs campus events, and delivers weekly broadcast TV news online. A selection of stories is printed and distributed on TMU’s campus every Wednesday during the school year. Submissions are welcome from all TMU students.

History and context
The Ryersonian began using social media in 2010, with a Twitter account (@theryersonian) and a Facebook page. In 2011 it shifted toward reporting across multiple media to fit a new curriculum. In 2006–07 the paper covered on-campus racial tensions, including a front-page piece about a Facebook group called “I’m a White Minority @ Ryerson” and the involvement of Don Andrews, a white supremacist and Ryerson alum. The coverage drew criticism from The Eyeopener, a rival student newspaper, and sparked campus conversations and student protest. A blog called Ryersonian Watch offered critical commentary, and debates followed about the paper’s editorial choices.

In June 2021, TMU’s School of Journalism announced that it would rename the publication (and the Ryerson Review of Journalism) to remove references to Egerton Ryerson, an architect of the Canadian Indian residential school system. The move came a day after a campus vigil commemorated the 215 Indigenous children found at Kamloops. In September 2021, the newspaper was renamed On The Record.
