Montgomery, also spelled Montgomerie, is a surname that comes from places in Normandy, France—Saint-Germain-de-Montgommery and Sainte-Foy-de-Montgommery. The earliest known bearer is Roger de Montgomerie, father of Roger de Montgomery, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury, who owned the village of Montgommery (now in Calvados, France). Some sources say the earl’s father was Hugh de Montgomery, but this may be a later error. The Montgomerie family were important nobles in early Anglo-Norman England and gave their name to Montgomeryshire in Wales. For some modern Montgomerys, the name comes from that Welsh place; the Scottish Montgomerys are an example. There are many places named Montgomery around the world—about 17 counties in the United States and many districts, neighborhoods and streets—named after people named Montgomery. In Scotland the name is sometimes Gaelicized as Mac Gumaraid, and in Ireland as Mac Iomaire.
