Marloes Sands

Marloes Sands is a remote sandy beach in Pembrokeshire, Wales, about 1.5 km long. It’s near the village of Marloes and is surrounded by cliffs. From the beach you can see Skokholm Island and Gateholm Island.

Location and access: The beach lies southwest of Marloes. There’s a National Trust car park nearby. A track from the main road leads down to the beach. Above the southeast cliffs is an old Royal Air Force airfield (RAF Dale). There are three ways to reach the beach: the main path from Runwayskiln, a northern route near Gateholm that requires some scrambling over rocks, and a southern route with steps to the middle of the beach.

Geology: The cliffs around Marloes Sands are made of red sandstone and grey shale. A famous feature is the Three Chimneys—three tall pillars of sandstone and mudstone. There used to be four chimneys, but the fourth collapsed in a storm in 1954.

Filming location: The beach was used for filming Snow White and the Huntsman (2011) and The Lion in Winter (1968).

Welsh name: Traeth Marloes.
