Mamar Mosque
Mamar Mosque
The Mamar Mosque is an 18th‑century mosque in the village of Mamar, Qubadli District, Azerbaijan. It served as a mosque until 1928, when the Soviet government closed many religious sites and used the building as storage. After Azerbaijan's independence, the mosque reopened in 1991, but in 1993 Armenian forces occupied the area and the mosque was desecrated, with its interior and roof demolished. In 2001 it was listed as a local immovable historical and cultural monument. In 2020, during the Second Karabakh War, the village was liberated and it was revealed that the mosque had been turned into a pigsty during the occupation. Azerbaijani officials called for condemnation from UNESCO, ISESCO, and the OIC. A 2021 short film from the Azerbaijani Consulate in Los Angeles highlighted damage to mosques including Mamar. Today the mosque remains abandoned and in ruins.
