Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) was a key figure in street art and neo-expressionism. In his relatively short career, he created more than 600 paintings and about 1,500 drawings, and he began making sculptures and mixed‑media works in 1979. He stopped using his graffiti tag SAMO in 1980 to focus on painting. His first sold painting, Cadillac Moon (1981), was bought by singer Debbie Harry for $200. The strongest market for his work came in 1982. In 2017 Sotheby’s sold Untitled (1982) for $110.5 million, a record price for an American artist at auction. From 1984 to 1985, Basquiat and pop artist Andy Warhol made a series of collaborative paintings that mixed their different styles.
