Foro Ermua
Ermua Forum (Foro Ermua) is a Spanish civic association created on January 13, 1998, mainly by people in the Basque Country. Its last president was Mikel Buesa. The group was formed after the killing of Miguel Ángel Blanco, a conservative Ermua city council member, by ETA in July 1997. Before the formal founding, Blanco’s death sparked the “Ermua spirit,” a local surge of solidarity. Foro Ermua says its aim is to continue that spirit through democratic means and within the Spanish state, opposing what it calls ETA’s nationalist fascism. It does not officially belong to a political party, but many members are linked to the People’s Party or to Union, Progress and Democracy, or are independent conservatives. Critics, especially from Basque pro-independence groups, say the forum acts as a front for conservative forces opposed to Basque self-determination.
