Knytt Stories
Knytt Stories is a 2007 indie adventure and platformer made by Swedish developer Nifflas. It is the sequel to Knytt and part of the Knytt trilogy. The game came out for Windows on 28 August 2007 and was later ported to Nintendo DS in 2010 by Rodrigo Roman as Knytt Stories DS, a fan-friendly open‑source homebrew with support from the original developer.
The story follows Juni, a female knytt, as she travels through 2D levels and earns new abilities like faster speed, a higher jump, and a double jump to reach new areas. Juni cannot attack and must dodge dangers. The initial scenario, "The Machine," has Juni trying to stop a machine that drains life from the world. An official expansion released the same year added more level sets. The game also includes a full level editor, letting players create and share their own levels.
Knytt Stories was praised for its engaging gameplay and graphics and led to a sequel, Knytt Underground, in 2012. It is noted for its accessibility, aiming to be easy for non-gamers, and for its minimalist approach without a typical HUD to boost immersion. Difficulty is controlled by a switch inside the game.
Reception highlighted its beauty and design. John Walker of Rock Paper Shotgun called it beautiful, with satisfying double jumps and spot-on level design, and praised the aesthetics and music. Hardcore Gamer praised the landscapes and non-violent gameplay. Mike Rose, in 250 Indie Games You Must Play, praised the user-created stories. Edge named it Internet Game of the Month in December 2007, calling it finely tuned, reminiscent of the original Metroid games, with beautiful ambient music.
