IG-11
IG-11 is a Star Wars droid from The Mandalorian on Disney+. At first he appears as a dangerous assassin who tries to capture Grogu, the Child, along with another bounty hunter. The Mandalorian defeats IG-11 to protect Grogu.
Kuiil, a friendly Ugnaught, repairs IG-11 and rewires him to become a nurse and protector. His new programming makes him calmer and more helpful, and he starts helping Kuiil, the Mandalorian, and Grogu.
IG-11’s new mission is to guard Grogu, not to kill him. He joins the group on missions to Nevarro, and his behavior shifts from deadly hunter to loyal protector. The Mandalorian still isn’t sure he can trust a droid, but IG-11 keeps changing for the better.
In the season finale, IG-11 sacrifices himself to save Grogu and the others. He fights stormtroopers, then self-destructs in a lava river to give the group a chance to escape. The Mandalorian and others mourn him, and IG-11’s body is no longer alive, even though his memory lingers in the story.
IG-11’s remains are rebuilt into IG-12, a pilotable exoskeleton controlled by Grogu. After more battles, the exoskeleton is rebuilt again with a memory system to serve as the city marshal of Nevarro, and Grogu later uses IG-12 in fights to help his friends. The exoskeleton is eventually destroyed during a dangerous escape.
Eventually, IG-11’s remains are used by friendly droids to repair and reintroduce him as Nevarro’s marshal. The character is voiced by Taika Waititi, who aimed for a voice that sounds human but not too emotional—somewhere between Siri and HAL 9000. IG-11 is inspired by the earlier IG-88 droid from the original Star Wars films.
IG-11 is known for being fast, accurate, and deadly, but his journey shows how a droid can change from a ruthless killer into a protector thanks to care and reprogramming. The role sparked strong fan reactions and is praised as a standout in the series, with Waititi earning Emmy recognition for his voice work.
