Chumpan River is in Campeche, southern Mexico. It starts at the border between Campeche and Tabasco and mainly flows north to Balchacah Lagoon, a side lagoon that feeds Laguna de Términos and ultimately the Gulf of Mexico. Its main tributaries are the San Joaquin and Salsipuedes rivers. The river drains about 1,874 square kilometers.

Its watershed is bordered by the Usumacinta watershed to the south and west and by the Candelaria watershed to the east. The area has a tropical, semi-humid climate, with an average temperature of about 25°C and around 1,602 mm of rain each year. The river’s average flow is about 1,368 million cubic meters of water per year. In the north, the region is part of the Petén–Veracruz moist forests ecoregion. As it moves into the northern lowlands, it passes through the Pantanos de Centla, a vast area of seasonally to permanently flooded wetlands. Mangroves around Laguna de Términos mark where fresh and saltwater mix, including near the Balchacah lagoon system.
