Plot
Lakshmipathi is a carefree young man in a village. His elder sister Kasthuri sends him to Chennai to visit her, but the villagers urge him to stay away, so he moves to live with Kasthuri. Kasthuri’s daughter Dhanalakshmi falls in love with Lakshmipathi, and he loves her too. In those days it was common for a woman to marry her mother's younger brother, which adds complexity to their relationship. An astrologer says their horoscopes don’t match and that their marriage would bring Lakshmipathi death. Worried, Kasthuri tries to prevent the union and evicts Lakshmipathi. Sivaraman, who loves Dhanalakshmi, hides Lakshmipathi and helps him stay nearby.
Kasthuri persuades Dhanalakshmi to forget Lakshmipathi, and Dhanalakshmi becomes distant. Sivaraman learns of the lovers and helps them meet secretly. Dhanalakshmi tells Lakshmipathi about the horoscope warning, but he urges her to ignore astrology. They continue meeting, and one day have a bike accident but survive. Kasthuri grows more worried. Feeling heartbroken, Lakshmipathi returns to his village.
Dhanalakshmi writes that her wedding is fixed with another man. Lakshmipathi rushes to Chennai and, on the wedding day, convinces Kasthuri to cancel the arranged match and approves his own marriage to Dhanalakshmi. They marry, but Dhanalakshmi collapses and reveals she had swallowed poison because she was about to marry someone else. She dies in Lakshmipathi’s arms.
