Ruhr.2010 – European Capital of Culture was a campaign in Germany’s Ruhr region to earn the title for 2010. It was the first time a whole region was considered, with Essen representing all 53 towns in the application. In 2010, Pécs in Hungary and Istanbul in Turkey also held the title. The Ruhr 2010 effort included all Ruhr cities. Essen promoted itself throughout the year, while each of the other cities had one week in 2010 as the region’s Local Hero. The campaign brought together many towns and cities and was led by a team of well-known artists and politicians.
