Vedlozero
Vedlozero (Karelian Vieljärvi) is an old village in Russia’s Republic of Karelia, in Pryazhinsky District. It is the administrative center of Vedlozerskoye Rural Settlement. The village sits on the northeast shore of Lake Vedlozero, where the Vohta River flows into the lake, about 50 km from the district’s center.
In Vedlozero you’ll find a pedigree farm, a forestry, a secondary school, a kindergarten, a medical point, a cultural center, and a library. The local Vieljärvi choir, started in 1938 by I. Levkin, still performs. In 2013, the village opened the Karelian Language House to promote the Karelian language.
Vedlozero was first mentioned in the 16th century and was part of the Obonezhskaya Pyatina in the Novgorod Feudal Republic. The population has declined since 1989, from about 1,445 people to around 950–1,000 in 2010.
