Lili Añel
Lili Añel, born Eulalia Añel in New York City, is an American singer-songwriter from El Barrio and the South Bronx. She moved to Philadelphia in 2004, where she performed locally and on NPR. Her song “Supposed to Be” from the album Every Second in Between was listed in USA Today’s Playlist on September 15, 2009.
She studied at the Leonard Davis Center for Performing Arts at City College of the CUNY, and spent a year in jazz vocal workshops with Sheila Jordan. She also joined Eddie Simon’s Guitar Study Center, auditing many classes because she could only afford one. After performing at Greenwich Village open mics, she started getting gigs, formed a band, and made her first CD, Laughed Last, released in 1994 on Palmetto Records to strong reviews and radio play.
In 2002 she released Hi-Octane Coffee, produced by J.B. Moore, featuring players like Drew Zingg, Frank Vilardi, Seth Glassman, and Johnny Gale. The album showcased funk, Americana, and folk, and earned good press.
In January 2007 she released Dream Again, co-produced with Cooke Harvey. It was released in Europe and Japan in October 2008 on a German label and received praise from JazzTimes and European media.
Her fifth album, Every Second in Between, came out September 30, 2009, produced by Glenn Barratt. It includes tracks like Voyager with a string quartet, a Nina Simone cover, and the empowering single “Supposed to Be.” Critics highlighted the album, and USA Today praised the title track.
Her sixth album, I Can See Bliss From Here, was released on September 17, 2013, and she co-produced it with Dale Melton.
