Jo Grant
Jo Grant, who later becomes Jo Jones, is a fictional character from Doctor Who played by Katy Manning. She first appears in 1971 as a new companion to the Third Doctor. Jo is a cheerful, brave civilian who works for UNIT, not a scientist, and she travels with the Doctor as he explores time and space.
With the Doctor, Jo faces many dangers, including Daleks and other alien threats. In her final story with the Third Doctor, The Green Death (1973), she grows more confident and decides to marry Professor Clifford Jones and follow him to the Amazon, leaving the Doctor and UNIT.
Jo returns famous years later in The Sarah Jane Adventures (2010) in the episode Death of the Doctor, where she meets Sarah Jane Smith and the Eleventh Doctor. The story involves aliens faking the Doctor’s death to steal the TARDIS using memories of Jo and Sarah Jane. By then Jo is married to Clifford Jones and has seven children and twelve grandchildren, including a grandson named Santiago, and she continues traveling the world for humanitarian and environmental causes.
Her character also appears in later stories, including a cameo in The Power of the Doctor (2022) and in Tales of the TARDIS (2023). Manning’s portrayal of Jo is remembered for loyalty and warmth, and Jo remains one of Doctor Who’s best-loved companions, celebrated for her strong bond with the Doctor and her emotional farewell from the classic series.
