Firsat Sofi
Firsat Sofi Ali (Kurdish: فرسەت سۆفی) (21 May 1978 – 18 November 2020) was an Iraqi Kurdish politician from the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP). He was born in Gazna village, Choman District, in the Kurdistan Region. Sofi served as the Governor of Erbil from 17 September 2019 until his death on 18 November 2020. He had previously been a member of the Kurdistan Region Parliament (2013–2018). He held a PhD in International Law from Salahaddin University-Erbil and taught law at Erbil Polytechnic University. He also worked as a legal adviser to the Kurdistan Region Presidency. Sofi contracted COVID-19 in October 2020 and was treated in Turkey; he died in Ankara, Turkey, on 18 November 2020 at age 42. He was married to Wisal Abdulaziz and had four children. After his death, Omed Khoshnaw became the new governor of Erbil. President Nechirvan Barzani mourned him as a capable legal expert and active parliamentarian.
