JWH-146 is a laboratory-made synthetic cannabinoid in the naphthoylpyrrole family. It activates the body's cannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2, with a binding strength (Ki) of about 21 nM for CB1 and 62 nM for CB2, meaning it is a bit more selective for CB1 (roughly 3 times stronger at CB1 than CB2). It was first developed in 2006 by John W. Huffman and colleagues to study how CB1 receptor ligands bind. It is not federally scheduled in the United States, though some states have banned it. In Canada, it is a Schedule II controlled substance, and in the United Kingdom it is classified as a Class B drug. It is not approved for medical use and is typically a research chemical.
